Just to say hello - Teaching and Learning at a Distance

Today as I was calling parents of students that I've seen often either one on one as a counselor, or students I've had in a small group, or students that I see for Check-in Checkout as the school I work for is a PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports) school, it dawned on me a component that makes relationships work. That component is being intentional. The parents that I spoke with seemed to be very positive and were excited that the counselor called, just to say hello and "check-in". The students in some cases were in the background yelling, "Hey Ms. Barclift", "let me talk to Ms. Barclift", "Tell Ms. Barclift I said hey", as they were excited their counselor called as well, just to say hello.

These families reminded me of the effects of being intentional. What we intentionally do in our relationships with others is what makes those relationships work. Although we are at a time where social distancing is a must, we must still remain intentional in our relationships with others. It's imperative that we allow the space for communication to be open. After all, although we are separated we are still together.

Let me leave you with this quote from John C. Maxwell

“Do all the good you can. By all the means you can. In all the ways you can. In all the places you can. At all the times you can. To all the people you can. As long as ever you can.”

 -John C. Maxwell

  1. Thank you for the words of encouragement. This entire situation is really making a positive impact on our relationships with our students and parents. I see a lot of good coming out of our conversations with our colleagues and our families. My interactions with families has been very positive. Keep up the good work.
